The Planet Is Down Ladies N’ Gents
Business news
1 Comment

The Planet’s (the worlds leading hosting provider) H1 Datacenter had an explosion. Yep, one of the transformers exploded and took out 3 surrounding walls. Over 9,000 servers in the facility has been affected and The Planet is still trying to figure out how to get them all back online as soon as possible.

Here is the latest post from their long update thread:

“As previously committed, I would like to provide an update on where we stand following yesterday’s explosion in our H1 data center. First, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for your patience during the past 28 hours. We are acutely aware that uptime is critical to your business, and you have my personal commitment that The Planet team will continue to work around the clock to restore your service.

As you have read, we have begun receiving some of the equipment required to start repairs. While no customer servers have been damaged or lost, we have new information that damage to our H1 data center is worse than initially expected. Three walls of the electrical equipment room on the first floor blew several feet from their original position, and the underground cabling that powers the first floor of H1 was destroyed.

There is some good news, however. We have found a way to get power to Phase 2 (upstairs, second floor) of the data center and to restore network connectivity. We will be powering up the air conditioning system and other necessary equipment within the next few hours. Once these systems are tested, we will begin bringing the 6,000 servers online. It will take four to five hours to get them all running.

We have brought in additional support from Dallas to have more hands and eyes on site to help with any servers that may experience problems. The call center has also brought in double staff to handle the increase in tickets we’re expecting. Hopefully by sunrise tomorrow Phase 2 will be well on its way to full production.

Let me next address Phase 1 (first floor) of the data center and the affected 3,000 servers. The news is not as good, and we were not as lucky. The damage there was far more extensive, and we have a bigger challenge that will require a two-step process. For the first step, we have designed a temporary method that we believe will bring power back to those servers sometime tomorrow evening, but the solution will be temporary. We will use a generator to supply power through next weekend when the necessary gear will be delivered to permanently restore normal utility power and our battery backup system. During the upcoming week, we will be working with those customers to resolve issues.

We know this may not be a satisfactory solution for you and your business but at this time, it is the best we can do.

We understand that you will be due service credits based on our Service Level Agreement. We will proactively begin providing those following the restoration of service, which is our number priority, so please bear with us until this has been completed.

I recognize that this is not all good news. I can only assure you we will continue to utilize every means possible to fully restore service.

I plan to have an audio update tomorrow evening.

Until then,

Douglas J. Erwin
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Back From Nashville!
Business Life Music Updates Work fun special trips video
0 Comments

Well i didnt really alert anyone about me going to Nashville, TN to see my dad record his new album with Robert Bradley but you know those things come fast. The trip down there wasn’t that bad, only took me about a half-hour to reach my destination. Through out the day they recorded and mixed. Then later we went around downtown taking pictures and slipping into the Blues Bar for a little bit for Documentary footage.

Tiffany Downey one of the main people behind whats now happening to the RBBS scene has i suppose taken a liking to me and my work. I’m expecting some footage from the trip to make mini “VID DOCS” or in other words a miniture documentary ranging from 5-7 minutes in length to help promote the bands new record and the true essence of Robert. Knowing that they “know” people and that my dad said that they could help me find my way into the biz, i have decided today that i am no longer considering joining the Army. I will now dedicate what i know to the RBBS videos and whatever else i get thrown at me.

Expect over 40 pictures from the trip to be uploaded to the blog. You can view them in a nice little gallery. But that will come tomorrow my good friends. So no teaser picture for you this time. :p

Gibson is like Jack Thompson
Business games

not again gibson

Just when we thought that things would settle down, Gibson is at it again. Their now suing retail stores such as GameStop, Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, Amazon, and Toys “R” Us, seeking to prohibit sales of the games. Actually lets add on to that. Gibson is also suing the original developer Harmonix, their parent company Viacom and publisher of Rock Band EA. Phew… sorry almost ran out of breath there. The funny part of this all is that they have yet to file a full lawsuit against current GH owner Activision.

Jack Thompson - Gibson Spokes PersonSo we have just about 9 company’s getting sued. Most of it is for prohibition on sales of the games, while the other is for the development of them. Sounding kind of familiar? I actually can picture having Jack Thompson as the electronic spoke person for Gibson. Or better yet, the actual lawyer behind this all. Conspiracy theory or not, something has to be done about this.

Taking a step back real quick, i find it hard to believe that this hasn’t come up before. I mean just about all the guitars (except Rock Bands strat) are all modeled after Gibsons. That’s why their logo is all over everything and their now having a problem? I’m just saying, but i thought i would of seen lawsuits much earlier than this. Guess they had some patent digging to do. Or Maybe it has something to do with declining guitar sales due to the fact of the success of the GH series. (over a billion baby)

Looking at the patent that Gibson has, i have a few things to say.

1. “head-mounted display”
-Umm… i play Guitar Hero and Rock Band on my high definition tv. Not a headset.
2. “that includes stereo speakers”
- Your TV has stereo speakers, so i really didn’t see any in my Rock Band box. But technically the game has multiple sound channels built for Surround Sound. Sorry Gibson.

That’s just some, there’s more. Check out the patent here.

is Microsoft cheating on HD-DVD?

Stupid HD-DVD, 360 is for Blu-ray

Well its official, HD-DVD is once again getting the boot from a major supporter. Microsoft is apparently in talks with rival company Sony about a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. Seems to me that HD-DVD is finally getting the shut out it deserves.

Heres a excerpt from the post over at Engadget:

Financial Times reports that “Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.” This is the first time we’ve heard any concrete details regarding such a move, though Microsoft has long suggested that adopting Blu-ray was a possibility. As early as CES 2006, in January of that year, Peter Moore said that Microsoft could release an external Blu-ray player if that format proved victorious (which it did); at CES this year, Microsoft’s Albert Penello said adopting Blu-ray was “something [they'll] have to consider” if “consumer choice” demands it.

So when Sony Electronics US president Stan Glasgow says Sony and Microsoft are chatting Blu-ray, it’s really not a surprise but an update. That said, Mr. Glasgow also mentioned talks with Apple, who has yet to offer a Blu-ray drive in any of its products and is (like Microsoft) focusing on digital downloadable content. We doubt Microsoft would release an internal Blu-ray drive, but an external drive seems like a safe bet in keeping with their HD media strategy.

Ziff Davis: Files for bankruptcy protection
Business
0 Comments

Last Chance Ziff
There has been talk alot recently of the publisher Ziff Davis (known for 1up.com and EGM) being in debt, but not much has been said until now. Ziff Davis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today. They need this to pay off the $390million debt they have had since last august. If the request is approved, it will help lighten the load on the debt. I’ll post more on this as i find out.
